Canada - The Immigration Path ahead
April 30, 2025
With the Canadian federal elections over and the Liberal Party emerging as the winner, it is expected to form a minority government. As such, the leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney will be invited to take over as the Prime Minister of Canada.
The Liberal Party will announce its immigration policies in the coming days, one can make an attempt to gauge the general direction their policies will take in view of their campaign statements. The Liberals acknowledged that the previous federal government allowed the number of immigrants to grow at a rate which was not sustainable and it overburdened the housing and social infrastructure. Thus the target immigration numbers wil be less than 1% of Canadas population every year beyond 2027.
Currently the numberof temporary residents in the country is about 7.25% of the total population. The Liberals plan to reduce this to less than 5% of the countrys population by end of 2027.
The party intends to increase the target for francophone immigration outside of Quebec to 12% by 2029 which represents a further increase from the current levels.
Another step the Liberals plan to take to attract top talent is by improving the Global Skills Strategy, a program which enables businesses to hire skilled workers and allows processing of their work permit in 2 weeks.
Thus the Liberal party seems on track to bring social and infrastructure stability to the country while improving the economic benefits by attracting top global talent.
